They’re Back!

The boat-tailed grackles have returned from wherever they go in winter. Unlike the grackles I’ve run into up north, these fellows have a sweet song. They do not annoy. When I lived in western Wisconsin, I often wanted to shoot at them to make them go away, they were so noisy, sitting in the trees, screaming their heads off. Well, I have no gun, and I wouldn’t have done it anyway, but still, the thought was there on many an occasion.

This one was sitting in the dying fruit tree, singing his heart out. (Fruit trees live only so long, then they must be replaced.)BoatTailed Grackle Siinging 3.16.15 sm

He remained there until I tossed out a handful of cereal flakes, at which point, he swooped down to eat. That’s what’s on his beak: food flakes. When the sun hits them just right, as it did in the photo above, their feathers are iridescent. In the photo below, the sun was behind him and he was standing in a way that didn’t catch the light, but I still think he’s a handsome bird. BoatTailed Grackle3.16.15 sm

As I’ve already noted, the dragonflies are also back. I like the peaceful feel of this pic. There’s a wide strip of long grass between the lawn and lake, and it offers privacy and homes to a lot of wildlife.Dragonfly on grass 3.16.15 sm

I was sitting at R’s outdoor table and noticed the clouds’ reflection in the glass. To the left, you can see the outer edge of one of the islands. The island on the right is out of frame. This is the lake that feeds into my canal. No engines are allowed on it, but people do appear in canoes and kayaks once in a while. R has both, and he’s hoping to bring them down here after his next trip up north. Sky reflectionin table 3.15.15 smThat’s it for this week. I’m looking forward to a lazy weekend where I don’t plan to do much other than read and stream stuff on TV. After a year of solid work, I’m on vacation through April, and I intend to enjoy it fully.

Next week, I hope to take a couple of the day trips I have planned. I love visiting new places!

I love the cloud pic and look forward to more dragonflies.
    Enjoy your well earned holiday:-)

    • 🙂 I will. I am feeling unbelievably lazy today, which is a continuation of the laziness I indulged yesterday. Heh.

I’ve given myself the next few days to be a complete couch pig, but already I’m itching to get back to the writing. Writing, however, is not work. Writing is a pleasure most of the time.

The lazing about sounds wonderful, I’m also enjoying the first day this week that I’m not running around from one thing to another.
Oh, I do hope you’re getting lots of writing in now that it can be fun and there’s no (or not much) pressure. Would love to have some of your wonderful words to look forward to soon.

As always gorgeous shots. I’ve loved reflections since I captured one accidentally years ago and decided to make it keep happening. 🙂

I’m so happy that you’re getting to relax and do stuff just because you want to, that is one of the best feelings in the world. Enjoy the couch time and your trips next week!

  3. Best part of this whole blog is seeing you’re on vacation. The pic of the table is awesome. Love that kind of day. I never knew Grackles were so pretty. They do tend to flock and become annoying.

The pictures as always, are stunning. I’m especially drawn to the clouds but that’s because I have a thing about reflections.

I’m so glad you’re taking a month off. All work and no play…and such. Enjoy your break. I can’t wait for whatever stories and pictures will result from your day trips.

I’ve never been a fan of the grackles in my neck of the woods. Yours are lovely.

Enjoy your time off. Looking forward to pictures from your trips around Florida. The clouds are beautiful. Is it okay to ask what happened to R’s mother?

    • One of her grandsons flew down from MN to drive her back to AZ in her vehicle. It took them four days. He flew home from there. All expenses paid for by his dad/her son (not R, a different son).

I think she was stupid to go back. She’s alone there, whereas here in FL, there is lots of family around. She’s 82. You shouldn’t be on your own at that age.
