America Takes a Giant Step Back to the 19th Century

We all know what happened last week. The Supreme Court reversed Roe v. Wade in its seeming intent to put their deity in charge of women, right there beside the Republicans. It also expanded gun rights after another string of killings, including the horrific one in Texas, where teachers and children were murdered. To top it off, it gutted the Miranda warning. Due process? SCOTUS is telling us to stick it up our butts.

Coming up, if Justice Thomas is to be believed, is the reversal of marriage equality, and other LGBTQ+ rights we’ve worked so hard to get, and the right to contraception. I guess family planning is something they no long want to allow either, despite overpopulation being a problem on the planet. There was no mention of once again making interracial marriages illegal, because Thomas, that hypocrite, is married to a white woman who also happens to have participated heavily in Trump’s attempted coup. Thomas is a FAIL on many levels. He should be removed from the court, along with the three newest justices, who lied during their congressional interviews. I have zero respect for this court. They can stick it up their butts.

To say I went into a funk is putting it mildly. I remember protesting back in the ’70s for legalized abortion, and fifty years later, here was are, right back where we started. I live in a red state. I wish I didn’t, but I can’t afford to move, and how could I anyway? Rents all over our country are too high for a single person on a fixed income to afford. I tell ya, looking back over my life–which saw the dawn of internet and so many other wonderful things–I cringe at what the extreme right-wing of the GOP is doing to us.

As of Friday, nine states have banned abortion, according to the Guttmacher Institute. On Sunday, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, a Republican, said she would move to ban abortion pills delivered online. Other states are expected to make similar moves.

I’m furious. I’m sick to my stomach. I want to scream and wail at the top of my lungs. Other countries, seeing what’s happening here, are appalled. They should be. What happens in America often spreads across the globe. They should prepare now to fight for their rights. We never thought things would go this far, and look what happened. 😦

Despite all that shit, or maybe because of it, I went out with the camera several times. It’s been raining a lot here, and the heat and humidity are awful, but early in the morning, it’s still bearable.

On the way back from picking up a prescription, I stopped at a wildlife preserve. I was hoping to see something new, but it was fairly quiet, except for a bird that taunted me from deep in the tree leaves. I never did spot the sucker. But this squirrel popped up, and the framing was great, so I took the shot.

Yesterday morning, I went down to the big lake, looking for dew-drenched dragonflies. Found one! To me it looks like jewelry. If the sun had been properly up, it would have sparkled like diamonds. It’s still pretty flashy, right? 🙂

Lastly, another dragonfly. This Halloween Pennant’s wings look like swirling skirts to me. They’re beautiful in any case, with their vivid orange and black coloring.

See you next time.

P.S. If you have the means, consider leaving the US. Things are going to get worse and may never get better, considering climate change is worsening much faster than expected. 😦 If I had my druthers, I’d just as soon live out my last years in a place where I feel welcome and safe, and that would not be America.
