Visiting the Past: Western Wisconsin

I lived in Wisconsin for thirty-five years.  The last several years, I lived in my own house in a small rural town. I loved the location but hated the hour commute to my job in winter.

Wisconsin has some great backroads, and I explored a lot of them on the moped. This run-down shed was near the town of Baldwin. You see a lot of places like this there; old people die, and the family doesn’t want the place, so it rots.

I was on my way north to visit R, saw this beautiful road, and went back to get a picture of it. It almost seemed to beckon me to come in and look around.

If you ever get the chance to visit Hudson, do it. Terrific town on the St. Croix River.  Take a left as you cross the bridge into Wisconsin, and there it is, small but vibrant, with lots of bars, restaurants, and cafes. Popular with the tourists year ’round.  Lakefront Park offers free concerts in the summer. I lived in North Hudson for five years. I have a lot of wonderful memories of this place.

Follow the river north and visit parks near the water. The St. Croix is one of the cleanest rivers in the country, and there is always plenty to do, no matter what the season.

See you next time.
