What’s Happening with the Weather?

The oddest weather is happening where I live. Not far into January, which is supposed to be very cold, with snow stacked high beside the roads and sidewalks, it rained.

That was last night. This morning, looking out my window, I see puddles. Not ice, but actual puddles. More rain is expected today. It’s presently 35 degrees, so it’s not freezing. When cars drive by, I see water spray behind the back wheels.

This is climate change. This is global warming. What does it mean to us? Well, the ice is melting faster than expected at the poles, so the oceans will rise. Anyone living on a coast is in danger of being flooded. Florida, which is pretty much flat from coast to coast, may once again sink into the water, making that state uninhabitable for who knows how long. Weather patterns will shift and change, making some areas deserts and others lush and green. Rivers that once flowed fast and deep will vanish. Already we’ve seen an increase in “bad” weather like tornadoes, hurricanes, and thunderstorms, both in numbers and severity. Last year in west Texas, they suffered through the worst drought in history. People in Europe died because the jet stream shifted and brought unexpected cold and snow.

Scientists speculate a rise in temperature two degrees centigrade will severely impact life on our planet. Already it’s risen 0.8 degrees centigrade. By the end of the century, temperatures will have risen four to six degrees centigrade.

It’s happening in our lives. It’s going to radically affect your children’s lives.

People will start migrating to places they can survive and make a living. I used to think getting back to Florida was what I wanted. In light of how things are changing, maybe I’d do better to stay where I am and let the warmer weather come to me.

Talk about climate change is becoming more prevalent, but so far, it’s only talk. I don’t see any concrete things being done to mitigate the effects of this problem, so basically, we’re fucked.

The price of everything is going to go through the roof. Already, food prices have risen steeply, making it hard to buy the things I need for a healthy diet. It’s only going to get worse.

Can it be stopped?

I don’t think so. In a country that will not create serious gun laws because they might offend a few people, do you really expect them to get serious about slowing global warming? You can’t even get people to turn off lights in rooms they aren’t in. In the parking lot every morning, people run their cars for twenty minutes before driving off. WTF! The car needs thirty damn seconds, but because people don’t want to shiver for five minutes, they waste all that fuel making the car warm. WASTEFUL, and it contributes to our problem.

Climate change is THE most serious thing we face right now. Scientists know it. Governments know it. Even some people know it. Yet nothing changes.

You’ve heard of the lemmings that go off the cliff because they keep following the one in front of them? Yeah, we’re lemmings, and we’re going off that damn cliff because we can’t stop ourselves.

Kinda scary, huh?

We’re having above average temperatures, too (plus more unpredictable and destructive weather patterns). This weekend it’s supposed to be somewhere between 59-62 degrees! That’s crazy for mid-January.

    • The problem is, “global warming” and “climate change” have been talked about so much recently, people are tired of hearing the words.

Unfortunately, it’s something that must be addressed, and the longer world leaders put this off, the worse it will be.
