Gray, Cooper, and two new friends, Lily and Wade, are talking on the houseboat. Cooper begins, referring to Wade.

Cooper nudged me, laughing loudly. “He’s got you figured out.”
He was teasing and I knew it, going out of his way to make Wade feel at home. We joked back and forth for Wade’s benefit, and Lily joined in, too.
But when the merriment died, Wade began to talk and it was as if all the darkness in the world had stepped on board and blotted out the sun.
It started when Wade was around three.
